THE 1985/88 SLAM DUNK CONTESTS...A NEVER ENDING BATTLE

3 Things In My World Will Never Ever Be Settled!

#3 What Would Happen If The Incredible Hulk (Marvel) and Superman (DC) really fought (an imaginary battle) for real. (I know I'm a geek.)

#2 Who Really Won The Sugar Ray Leonard Vs. Marvin Hagler Fight (I will be writing about that too.)

The Number one thing that will NEVER BE SETTLED IN MY MIND IS...WHO REALLY WON THE 1985 and 1988 Slam Dunk Contests?

Now before all my hardcore ball fans start yelling Vince Carter...we are not talking about the best dunker ever....

I am discussing the phenomenon that was The Slam Dunk Contests between Michael Jordan and Dominique Wilkins.

I surmise that if it happened today...Jordan would take home the trophies because through the spectrum of time sports writers and young fans have made Jordan into Paul Bunyan and Big Foot all rolled up into one.

I lived through The Jordan years....

The 1985 and 1988 Slam Dunk Contests happened when Jordan was only "Fonzie" from Happy Days...however Dominique Wilkins was a terror of a dunking machine himself. While the NBA was wondering (for real) whether Jordan was going to be able to assume the mantle of "the next Dr. J"- Wilkins was making his own legend as "The Human Highlight Reel."

When these 2 forces game together head to head in the 1985 Slam Dunk Contests....It would not be much of an exaggeration to say...The Hulk left down, Superman was not available for comment, and perhaps the only event more electrifying was The Thriller In Manilla.

Jordan Vs. Dominique for the undisputed Slam Dunk Crown...

Though Dominique Wilkins won the title in 1985...that contest has RIGHTLY been disputed and still is.

Injuries kept the 2 giants from rematching until 1988.
In 1988...The Michael Jordan and Dominique Wilkins that entered Chicago Stadium that day would have creamed their younger selves (from 1985) in a dunk contest.

I have been writing for over ten years and have watched this 1988 contest several times...the words still are just beyond reach!

I can give you one word...

CLASSIC!

In the final tally I believe Wilkins averaged 48 and Jordan 49 ....

I am not saying Dominique was robbed (although I have said it....)

However, being as close as it was and the contest taking place on Michael Jordan's home court there was no way he was going to lose.

Also keep in mind MJ never dunked against Wilkins again ever.

I still think Wilkins won...but God knows....it so much of a tie...that gets closer and closer every time I watch it!

5 Reasons NOT To Impeach This President

I usually don't write or discuss politics anymore.
Well not in blog form anyway. I usually leave that to my art.
So this one is kind of special.

I do still think for myself however...and after the first year or more of the feces follies that is The Trump Show and seeing so many democrats crushing republican candidates decided I would  like to share these thoughts.

5 REASONS NOT TO IMPEACHE
THE PRESIDENT

5. TO SHOW OUR YOUTH WHAT BULLIES AND BIGOTS LOOK LIKE

Chris Rock may have said it best on his Netflix special when Rock explained...no one knew what a real bully was till Trump showed up.

Also many children and immature adults have heard about how bad things were in the 1960's...well...your children are going to read about The Donald Trump years and say... "At least things are as bad as when Trump was the president." Yes if you are anything but a rich white guy...you are living in infamous years. These times are birthing the next generation of leaders as the national school walk-outs and other protests are showing.

So let's keep Trump.
So he can keep proving what people of color have been telling the world about American bigotry for years.
From "Bad Hombres" to "Pocahontas" to "The Blacks" ...Trump is the easiest way to teach.

4. TRUMP IS THE BARNEY PHIFE OF PRESIDENTS (WHICH IS KIND OF AN INSULT TO CLUMSY AND ADDLED DEPUTY SHERIFFS EVERYWHERE)
I can't be the only one that comes home and turns on MSNBC and CNN to see if Trump has finally just decided to flinging feces?
Everyday he says something crazier and crazier.

And the great thing is...if the black president had acted this way....Black people would have been the first to check him.

To me The Donald Trump Presidency is the funniest thing to happen since George W. Bush!

3. TRUMP IS SO MISERABLE IN THE WHITE HOUSE

Image result for the twilight zone a nice place to visit
Trump is like the crook on The Twilight Zone that finds himself in hell and gets everything he wanted.

Trump is doing 4 years of hard labor as President.

He hates his job worse than you do.

He hates the people he works for and with.
He hates getting information.

He's never off the clock.

He considers The White House a "dump."
He can't be himself and every time he is...it makes him look like a schmuck on national TV.

He would rather be playing golf in Russia with Vlad, and Stormy.

Most of all...he is worried that any minute the police are gonna come to his door for dating outside of his race. (Wait is Russian a race?)

Trump would love nothing more than to be kicked out of office and talk trash about how he was cheated. Make him do 4 years and get voted out in shame.

2. MIKE PENCE IS A WHOLE PROBLEM
As much as Donald Trump is a fumbling , bumbling President.
If Trump is removed. Mike Pence would be in the oval office.
PENCE would know how to get the harshest bigot driven, poverty punishing, 18th century laws passed.

A vote for IMPEACHING Trump is a vote for President Pence and believe me...Unless you are a white-white, rich-rich guy you don't want to see that.
1. TRUMP IS THE BEST WAY TO KEEP PEOPLE VOTING AND DEMOCRATS ON THEIR TOES.
Keep Trump in office so that people will keep coming in waves to elect strong candidates.

With Trump in office...the democrats have stopped (at least for the moment) taking black votes for granted.

Now if we can get the democratic party to listen and act on the wishes of the progressives that want to see a GREAT AMERICA. Not just a American that's great for some of the people all of the time and the rest get crumbs.

MY TELEVISION'S ON....Atlanta on FX.

Welcome to my new feature...."MY TELEVISION'S ON."
As the mood strikes me I will blog about TV.
Over the years I have written critically about television and film for Pleasant News, Vibe Magazine, XXL, Philadelphia Weekly, several other magazines and now my own website.

There are several shows that I have started to start this column about...

However last night I laughed hard and long as I watched Donald Glover's ATLANTA so...here we go!

Everyone that knows me, knows I hate coming late to a party.
However, I feel like I am right on time with jumping into season number 2 of the party that is Atlanta on FX.

Shout out to one of my favorite style makers and a resident of Atlanta my good friend "Brooklyn." She's the one that hipped me to why I would enjoy this show.

In truth I stayed away from the first season because I am not the biggest fan of urban country.... I have till now not enjoyed the fashion, music or slang. I do not find the culture slow or negative...just normally not a personally good fit for me.

I did however watch the first episode of season 2 called Alligator Man which features Katt Williams. By the way....Donald should let me produce a spin off featuring Katt William's character "Willie."

ATLANTA was not the comedy/drama I thought it would be.

First of all I love dark humor and the world that Donald Glover has created around hip hop, dope boys, the underground hip hop industry and strip clubs is both funny and dark.

My favorite part about Atlanta is that it's not afraid to get dark, ridiculous and even adult and gritty. It's like The Wire with punch lines...okay it's nothing like The Wire with punch lines....until it is.

Last night's show called Money Bag Shawty was one of the best written single episodes of any television show I have seen this year! The 3rd episode...really and truly made me think of what SEINFELD would be if shot in Atlanta with a Black Cast.

Most of the show revolves around trying to spend a $100 bill while black and the other part of the show...is funnier than that.

Here's the thing. I am not a huge fan of people celebrating the use of alcohol and drugs. However, in keeping with the tone of the show...it would feel a lot less honest if this show were produced with me in mind instead of the audience it was conceived for and that has followed so far.

Reading is STILL Fundamental: X-Men 132

I will always remember the day I bought X-Men 132.

It was the day that The X-Men (for a while) became a monthly comic book I loved and cherished more than The Incredible Hulk.

(Today I would say I love the Hulk more. However, I love no single issue of a comic book more than X- Men 132.)

You see even though the story and art was provided by Marvel's version of The Beatles -Chris Claremont, John Byrne and Terry Austin is breath taking and with out equal...there's a story behind the story.
You see X men 132 represents much more. Here's what happened.

I got home from school and my dad tells me to "Get in the car." "We going somewhere."

Now. This was 1979 and my dad didn't believe in communism, Amway...or TELLING ME TO DO SOMETHING TWICE.

I had no idea where we were headed of I was in trouble.

We park and I follow my father into the filthiest, nastiest, smuttiest adult bookstore in Atlantic City.

I am looking around and I am seeing parts of the woman's body that I never ever thought I would see...(with my father in the room.) Also these ladies were doing a lot.

Then my dad gave me $5 and pointed to a spinner rack of comics that were in mint condition but 5 for a 1$.

I came home with stacks of books...in that stack was X-Men 132..titled "And Hellfire Is Their Name."

That book represents to me...a funny story of how my father and I bonded...in a hot bed of sexual smut that could only happen like it did back then.

My dad will have been gone 6 years in April and I still miss him and I never got to ask him...how he found that place.

                                                                    -------------
Now with regard to the actual story of X men 132?

The art of John Byrne and Terry Austin is just a tour de force. And let me say...Glynis Oliver never gets the credit she deserved for setting the moods with her coloring during this incredible run on The Uncanny X-Men.

There are other books in this run that have over all better art. That are happier. More earth shaking events.

However what I still love about this book besides how it connects me to dad...is that this book is The X-Men's version of The Empire Strikes Back.....

I remember reading the end of the book and just being upset and yelling that I had to wait to see how it ended. SPOILER ALERT: The following 2 books are better than Return Of The Jedi.

X Men 132 is one part of The Dark Phoenix Saga...I doubt the graphic novel format will have the "PUNCH IN THE TEETH" effect it had on me when I finished reading it and wondered for 30 days (thank God it was no longer bi-monthly at that time.) The X Men books from the late 70's with Claremont, Byrne, Austin and Oliver are worth their weight in platinum and still some of the best stories from "The House Of Ideas."
