Good Night KEVIN CHEATHAM an Atlantic City Legend

Today.
In fact hours ago. I just found out that another one of the people that inspired me has passed away.

In the late 80's my buddy took me to see a stage play at Atlantic City's Uptown Complex ( a elementary school.) The play was written and directed by a young talent named Kevin Cheatham from the same neighborhood I hailed from.

Kevin inspired me because he was writing and directing and producing stage plays...before Spike Lee's She's Gotta Have It and before Tyler Perry was known as Madea.

It is ironic that earlier this year the world of entertainment also lost Shelly Garrett who was a contemporary of Kevin's...Garrett's plays gained world wide acclaim with his play Beauty Shop.

Back to Kevin.
It is no exaggeration to say that Kevin was a catalyst for who I became and who I am today.
When I saw his play Crack House ...it was like permission to do everything artistically I wanted to do and to make it my own and to monetize what I do.

Several years ago I got to tell him how he inspired me in one of our AC Weekly interviews and on 96.1 WTTH when The Light was called The Sunday Morning Breakfast Club.

It's really sad that I will not be able to have him as guest again and tell him how much his star guided my way.

Atlantic City, City Council, Mayor Gilliam...we need to make sure AC never forgets this man who will always be a legend.
__________

In March of 2006 I interviewed Kevin Cheatham for AC Weekly Magazine. Here is a link to that article.
