5 Questions about our 2018 Holiday Drive

I was at an event the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and DJ Swoosh said..."Damn Ray.
You have holiday drive events almost every weekend in December."

I hate to explain myself.
To a degree I just don't think like everyone else, I never did.
I have found out the more I explain the less people relate.
To a degree, you have to trust and like me...or deal with other people. That’s fine.

However, this time I will share some information.

How Did  Darkseed Communications, Ray Tyler, The Light start with The Annual Holiday Drive?

Way back when I was a columnist for The Atlantic City Weekly. I went to the publisher Lew Steiner and explained that I felt a responsibility to the readers and the community that produced me to give back. It was already the week before Thanksgiving. So I proposed that we put out a box in the lobby for donations and I would write about  the drive in my column. Lew did better than that. He added a advertisement and we both pledged to donate $100 each of our own money if we got no toys.

I am still proud of The AC Weekly readers and my radio show of the time The Alternative Soul, Breakfast Club. The Wednesday after the drive was announced I was called to the office to pick up the toys. In Fact that year we gave  toys to everyone that asked for toys, we also got a great donation of hoodies and sweat suits from NBA player Stephon Marbury that we gave to The Covenant House and we were able to give toys to several organizations to help their drive.
The good people of The Shore Mall also were good to us.

Why The Parties?

Why not I'm a festive person. Our first party was at Pistol Pete’s and we also gave away awards to many great people here in the community. We will not be doing the award piece this year.

However we are giving award cash award prizes for art at our December 2nd and 16th events.
Parties and events are a way for people to enjoy the season and help.
Some people just want to drop off  toy or make donation...some people want to be more involved.

Why 3 Events This Year?

As great as our very first year was. It has been increasingly hard to get donations. In most cases...people still want to give. People give to other sources and that’s great too.

Also some of the same people that gave in the past..do not have it now.
So in order to get about one quarter of what we had donated in 3 weeks time (that first year,), now takes about 2 months. I also work hard and actually pester friends for donations and contributions.

Another reason I made the choice to increase the events is because now I produce radio and media in The Philadelphia area. As long as I am alive I refuse to go into any community and make money and build my brand and give nothing back. So now I also try and help people that request from me in Philadelphia, Camden and that area as well.

What Are You Collecting This Year?

Toys
Canned Goods
New Socks, Hats, Gloves
Financial Donations (every year I have to run out and get something I may not have from a request, I come across great deals like $5 coats, the other day someone asked for money for baby formula.)

What Do People or Organizations Have To Do to Request Help?

Ask.
I help as many as I can. I do not buy Playstations or Xboxes.
However, if anyone is bold enough to ask for help?
I am determined to do what I can. What I can’t I try and find resources for.

So if you’d like to help this year?

December 2nd is DJ’s and Artists Against Hunger at Ventnor Coffee

December 9th is The Alternative Soul Holiday Show at

The Labelle Art Gallery in Haddonfield,NJ

December 16th is The Festive Fest at The Bourre in AC.

THE MICROPHONE FIEND...JILL SCOTT

The Raymond Tyler Media Editorial
Number One!
Do I Slap The Mic Outta Your Mouth?

This week I have seen a lot of "big" talk about the Jill Scott video where she "simulates" a sexual act.

Some are cheering her on like she in the 21st Century, Vanessa del Rio (I have no idea who VDR is but I understand she enjoyed "the mic" as well.)

Others are acting like Jill Scott has defiled the sanctity of the world wide web and degraded herself as a woman.

I love Jill Scott ...and I am not going to say much.

Since Jill, started making music and music videos, I have met people that have never met her that projected their experience, lifestyles and now hang ups on to "Jill Scott."

I have met several women that have said "Jill Scott" validates them being mad at other women, baby daddies ,men, or whoever. The Jill Scott I know/knew is a lot of things...smart, honest and yes sensual at times on stage...but never "angry."

My point is some people will always find someone they can project their hang ups on...

Now that being said...YOU. You have every right to be offended...even disappointed with the whole Jill Scott "blessing" the mic video.

Let Uncle Raymond share this however. I don't like black eyed peas (I detest the food...the band I messes with)...I don't go to war with black eyed peas, or the growers or the eaters. I just do not eat black eyed peas and GO ON WITH MY LIFE! You can do that.

YOU CAN TOTALLY....IGNORE SOMETHING THAT YOU DO NOT LIKE WITH OUT HAVING TO CONVINCE EVERY ONE ELSE TO NOT LIKE IT...and guess what...you can totally spend that time indulging what makes you happy and letting the world know about that.

What's Your Opinion? We'd Like To Know!

Good Night STAN LEE

I just found out that Marvel Comics founder Stan lee has passed away.

Real quick for those that may not know....If you enjoyed Marvel Movies like Avengers and Spider Man homing coming? Stan Lee was the creator along with Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko (who also passed away earlier this year.)

Back in the 60's Marvel was a relatively small publishing company that became huge with the publication of The Fantastic Four, followed by The Hulk, The X-men and Spider Man.

By the time I started reading comics in the 1970's Marvel was a multi-million dollar company.

By the 2000's...Marvel had not only conquered publishing, but the company had produced great Saturday Morning Cartoons, iconic live action television shows and were about to conquer the film industry.

As I think about Stan Lee's impact....the one word that comes to mind is "POETRY."

There had been scores of super heroes before Stan Lee and scores after and the world of fantasy will somehow go on.

However, Stan Lee brought the art of poetry to comic book writing.

For instance The Silver Surfer is indeed a cool ,alien on a far out space surf board. Stan Lee penned him as "The Sentinal of The Space Ways." He had a way of making the fantastic and amazing relative to 12 year-old kids that wanted comic books to be more than just throw away literature.

He also added poetry and "Shakespeare" (as an adjective) to the "lives" of characters like Spider-man, The Thing and The Hulk.

Mr. Lee also really created the idea of the shared universe of super heroes.

Most importantly Mr. Lee never forgot that people read his books for FUN. So while there was a lot of story telling that made the reader feel like , "Peter Parker goes through the same things I do" he always gave readers great adventure as well.

There's not a day that goes by that Mr. Lee does not inspire me in some creative way.
I have never known a world without Stan Lee...and the world of fantasy will never be the same again.

Good Night and Thanks for The Memories!

How DJ Fah D Inspired DJ's Against Hunger

Sunday December 2nd at 6pm
Ventnor Coffee, in Ventnor, NJ
Free Admission
(Requested Donation $10 but no one turned away.)

Every year my radio show produces and curates several events during the holiday season to help those that need it.

We ask for new unwrapped toys.
We ask for new socks, gloves and hats.
We ask for canned goods.

To encourage people to give we sponsor poetry readings/open mics.
We produce parties.
We produce holiday special shows.

This year we are curating a brand new event that we hope will be an annual happening called...

DJ's and Artists Against Hunger and Homelessness!

While I admit it is a wonderful idea...it not an idea that came without the inspiration of DJ Fah D.

First off if I have not said it publicly.

Fah D is a brother that I am extremely proud of!

He is a leader in more ways than just music.

When Fah invited me to his Artists Vs. DJ's Kickball Game I was never more proud.
Fah D put together an event for people to come and have fun and socialize for a great cause.

I do hope we will do this event again, but if not...the impact still lives on.

At our event we have several things going on at The Ventnor Coffee.

We will have special sets by
DJ Fah D

DK K-Ave

DJ Swoosh

And we are adding more!

We also are sponsoring a HIP HOP HOLIDAY ART CONTEST!
And we will have vendors and board games.
I am inviting my media personality colleagues out that day as well.
We will also have door prizes.
And we will be auctioning off a pair of passes to the 2019 DJ Expo in Atlantic City!

We have even more surprises to come.

________________

So again.
I want to thank DJ Fah D for being one of the inspirations for DJ's Against Hunger.
