Good Night STAN LEE

I just found out that Marvel Comics founder Stan lee has passed away.

Real quick for those that may not know....If you enjoyed Marvel Movies like Avengers and Spider Man homing coming? Stan Lee was the creator along with Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko (who also passed away earlier this year.)

Back in the 60's Marvel was a relatively small publishing company that became huge with the publication of The Fantastic Four, followed by The Hulk, The X-men and Spider Man.

By the time I started reading comics in the 1970's Marvel was a multi-million dollar company.

By the 2000's...Marvel had not only conquered publishing, but the company had produced great Saturday Morning Cartoons, iconic live action television shows and were about to conquer the film industry.

As I think about Stan Lee's impact....the one word that comes to mind is "POETRY."

There had been scores of super heroes before Stan Lee and scores after and the world of fantasy will somehow go on.

However, Stan Lee brought the art of poetry to comic book writing.

For instance The Silver Surfer is indeed a cool ,alien on a far out space surf board. Stan Lee penned him as "The Sentinal of The Space Ways." He had a way of making the fantastic and amazing relative to 12 year-old kids that wanted comic books to be more than just throw away literature.

He also added poetry and "Shakespeare" (as an adjective) to the "lives" of characters like Spider-man, The Thing and The Hulk.

Mr. Lee also really created the idea of the shared universe of super heroes.

Most importantly Mr. Lee never forgot that people read his books for FUN. So while there was a lot of story telling that made the reader feel like , "Peter Parker goes through the same things I do" he always gave readers great adventure as well.

There's not a day that goes by that Mr. Lee does not inspire me in some creative way.
I have never known a world without Stan Lee...and the world of fantasy will never be the same again.

Good Night and Thanks for The Memories!

How DJ Fah D Inspired DJ's Against Hunger

Sunday December 2nd at 6pm
Ventnor Coffee, in Ventnor, NJ
Free Admission
(Requested Donation $10 but no one turned away.)

Every year my radio show produces and curates several events during the holiday season to help those that need it.

We ask for new unwrapped toys.
We ask for new socks, gloves and hats.
We ask for canned goods.

To encourage people to give we sponsor poetry readings/open mics.
We produce parties.
We produce holiday special shows.

This year we are curating a brand new event that we hope will be an annual happening called...

DJ's and Artists Against Hunger and Homelessness!

While I admit it is a wonderful idea...it not an idea that came without the inspiration of DJ Fah D.

First off if I have not said it publicly.

Fah D is a brother that I am extremely proud of!

He is a leader in more ways than just music.

When Fah invited me to his Artists Vs. DJ's Kickball Game I was never more proud.
Fah D put together an event for people to come and have fun and socialize for a great cause.

I do hope we will do this event again, but if not...the impact still lives on.

At our event we have several things going on at The Ventnor Coffee.

We will have special sets by
DJ Fah D

DK K-Ave

DJ Swoosh

And we are adding more!

We also are sponsoring a HIP HOP HOLIDAY ART CONTEST!
And we will have vendors and board games.
I am inviting my media personality colleagues out that day as well.
We will also have door prizes.
And we will be auctioning off a pair of passes to the 2019 DJ Expo in Atlantic City!

We have even more surprises to come.

________________

So again.
I want to thank DJ Fah D for being one of the inspirations for DJ's Against Hunger.

GOOD NIGHT..NTOZAKE SHANGE words and art By Raymond Tyler

The truth is being from Atlantic City, I came across many of theater's classic plays by Black writers, relatively late in my artistic life.

I was in my mid 20's when I first saw A Raisin In The Sun. I was 30 before I first read Their Eyes were Watching God. (Not a Black Play but should be done as one.)

I had never seen For Colored Girl Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Was Enuf, until 1996.

That was the year I made to trip to Atlanta for The National Black Arts Festival. I urge every artist of every color to go. I am making the commitment to myself to attend the next one.

Back to For Colored Girls, I had never had a play at that time gut punched me so hard....I was floored by the naked honesty and drama that was true to my life (even as a black man that loves women.)

For Colored Girls was one of the first plays I saw that bore witness to a Black Experience that I had lived. Women that WERE my mother, aunts, cousins, former lovers were not just thrown on stage but treated with value in a public forum.

I got to speak briefly with Ms. Shange and was so excited because I learned then she hailed from Trenton, NJ (and I was from Atlantic City.)

I had not seen here again until recently when The African American Museum of Philadelphia celebrated The 40th Anniversary of  For Colored Girls.

The passing of Ntozake Shange is a tragic loss to the world of the arts...though the giant and the spirit have moved on...HER BLESSINGS WILL ALWAYS REMAIN WITH US.

Good Night and God Bless.

Note: The original and prints of the art from this article are available. The proceeds will go to hep fund our special 2019 Arts/Educational Programming. Your support is appreciated.

Missing Aretha ...Already

Nothing I can or could write will do justice to what Aretha Franklin is and will always be.
That being said. Her passing today leaves me in serious need of a hug.

How Serious?

The wind in the sails of my art has always...ALWAYS been Aretha Franklin and Richard Pryor.

No I do not sing and I do not tell jokes.

However, I want my art to be as important and urging and great and as important to culture as Aretha's songs and Pryor's jokes.

Yes. I have failed. However, I take some comfort in knowing I have failed by heading for a higher bar than a lower one. Infact Franklin forced me to fail while reaching for the highest artistic bar.

Here are 5 Things I Miss Already.

5. Her voice.
In my opinion there have only been a handful of  top shelf voices, ever and she was at the tip with Sam Cooke, and Nat King Cole. Not quite on her level but also on the top are Teena Marie, Lou Rawls, Gladys Knight, Patti LaBelle.

4. Her connection to MUSIC HISTORY.
Miss Franklin started in church and has had a connection with almost every artist that really matters in Gospel. When her father was alive they had hosted Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. , Sam Cooke, Albertina Walker and so many more!

3. Her Music Via The Piano.
I remember the first time I saw her live. I was so thrilled being able to see her perform live and then 25 minutes into the show, they wheeled out the piano. I had almost forgot she was a concert pianist.

2. Her Importance To Culture.
She could sing the phone book.
However, she always made sure that the bulk of her music...spoke to the hearts of the community she came from. She has touched ladies in church praying with standards like Precious Lord but delivering these spirituals in a way that made you cry for people you knew. If she sang Day Dreaming you felt yourself sitting next to a woman on a bus , who just worked 2 shifts but wanted to get back home to her man. When she sang RESPECT ...you felt like you suddenly deserved the queen/king treatment for queen/king work. Her music was enjoyed by all. However, there was never a disconnect from her and the people touched by the music. Black People, the church and America all claimed her and mourn her passing.

1. The Gift Of Her Song....

My words mean nothing here....I would instead invite you to listen to Sparkle. One of my favorites that moved me to almost cry when I first heard it an my 20's.....today...I am scared to listen to it..I may fall out....(did I mention I need a hug)
